FIRST YEAR
Aird & Berlis Award in Contracts: Awarded to the student achieving the highest standing in Contracts. Value: $1,000
Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP Scholarship: Awarded to second-year Law students who demonstrate academic excellence in the first year of their law studies. To be eligible, a student will have obtained an academic standing in the top 10% of the law school class and demonstrated financial need. Additional selection criteria may include: membership in a historically disadvantaged group, as outlined by the Ontario Human Rights Commission; involvement in the community; participation in extracurricular activities at the University or the Law School; and whether the student has multiple responsibilities and limited support. The award will continue into third year if the recipient's second year average places him or her in the top 20% of the class for that year and he or she continues to demonstrate financial need. Candidates must complete an online financial need application through the Office of the Registrar's Web site, in addition to completing an application form through the Student Services Office of the Law School (both of which are due October 31). The Registrar's Office will assess financial need and the Faculty of Law will make the final selection. This scholarship was established by a generous gift from Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP. Value: 2 at $5,000 (one new student and one continuing student each year)
This scholarship is being redirected under the Ontario Trust for Student Scholarship Program and as a requirement, recipients must meet Ontario residency requirements.
Borden Ladner Gervais LLP Research Fellowship: Awarded to a student finishing his/her first year of law school who is selected to work as a research assistant for a member of the faculty in the summer period based on his/her academic excellence. Final selection will be determined by the Dean and appointed Faculty representatives. This Student Research Fellowship Program was established by the law firm of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP. Value: $10,000
Borden Ladner Gervais Professional Excellence Award: Awarded annually to a first-year student in the Faculty of Law based on academic excellence. The recipient must have demonstrated a commitment to professional and service excellence by consistently expanding his/her knowledge of the law, demonstrating the highest standards of integrity, offering innovative ideas, taking a collaborative approach, and contributing to the community. Applications can be obtained from the Faculty of Law and must be submitted along with a one-page statement outlining the applicant's outstanding attributes by July 1. Final selection will be made by the Scholarship Committee in the Faculty of Law. This award has been created by Borden Ladner Gervais LLP. Value: $1,500; Effective: 2007-2008 to 2011-2012
Canada Law Book Limited Prize: Awarded to the student achieving the highest standing in Torts. Value: $250 (Book Prize)
Criminal Lawyers' Association Prize in Criminal Law: Awarded to the student achieving the highest standing in Criminal Law. Value: $300
Fasken Martineau DuMoulin Awards: Awarded to the students standing first, second and third in the first year of the LLB program. Value: $750, $650, $550.
Mitch and Leslie Frazer Scholarship: Awarded annually to a full-time student entering second year in the Faculty of Law based on academic achievement (top 10% of the class) and financial need. Preference will be given to a student who has made a significant contribution to the life of the law school and his or her classmates. Applications for this scholarship can be accessed online through the office of the Registrar's web site and must be submitted, along with a letter describing the candidate's contributions to the Law School, by March 15. The Office of the Registrar will determine financial need and the Faculty of Law will select the recipient in July. This award was established by Mitch (LLB '99) and Leslie Frazer through Foundation Western. Value: $500
Lang Michener Prize: Awarded to the student with the highest standing in Property Law. Value: $300
Michael C. McInerney Award: Awarded to the student who achieves the highest mark in Property. This award was established through Foundation Western. Value: $400
Malcolm J. McKinnon Award: Classmates and friends of the late Malcolm J. McKinnon (first year law student September 1971 to February 1972) created an award in his memory. The award is to remind the first year class that the school offers not only a legal education, but also an opportunity to grow and develop into concerned individuals willing to give of themselves so that others may benefit from their knowledge and friendship. This award is given to the person in the first year class who best exemplifies this spirit. A plaque
McMillan LLP Award: Awarded annually to the student who has achieved highest overall academic standing in first year law. Final selection will be made by the Faculty of Law Scholarship Committee. The scholarship was made possible by a generous donation from McMillan Binch. Value: $500
Margaret H. McNulty Prizes (2): Awarded annually to two students who, in their first year, have shown great promise. Value: $100 each
Ogilvy Renault LLP Award: Awarded to a student entering second year of study in the Faculty of Law who has achieved academic excellence in the first year of law school. Only students on the Dean's Honour List will be eligible to apply. The student must also have contributed to the academic life of the school and demonstrated an ability to work well with others. Application forms are available from the Office of the Associate Dean (Academic) in the Faculty of Law and must be accompanied by a short statement (maximum 500 words), both of which are due by April 1. Nominations from faculty and students will be solicited also. Final selection will be made by the Scholarship Committee in the Faculty of Law. This award has been created by Ogilvy Renault LLP. Harold G. Fox Education Fund Awards (2): Awarded to two students in first or second year who show exceptional promise. Value: 2 at $1,000
McCarthy Tétrault Awards (2): Awarded to two students in first or second year who, in the opinion of the teaching faculty, merit special recognition for academic achievement. Value: $500 each
McCarthy Tétrault Leadership Awards: One award will be made annually to a student who has completed Year 1 Law and a second award will be made annually to a student who has completed Year 2 based on superior academic achievement and demonstrated initiative and leadership qualities through participation in extra-curricular activities within the Western Law School or in the community. A selection committee in the Faculty of Law will select the recipients. These awards are made possible by a generous donation from McCarthy Tétrault LLP. Value: $5,000 each; Effective May 2005

Canada Law Book Limited Prize: Awarded to the student achieving the highest standing in Evidence. Value: $250 (Book Prize)
Edna Yuet-Lui Chan Memorial Award: Awarded to a second year student who has best displayed ingenuity, humour, enthusiasm and camaraderie. This award was established by family, friends and colleagues of Edna Yuet-Lui Chan, LLB 1985. Value: $600
Criminal Lawyers Association of Ontario Award for Second Year: Awarded to a full-time undergraduate student in Year 2 Law who best exemplifies the objectives of the Criminal Law Concentration Program while maintaining a high academic standard (minimum B average). This award is made possible by a gift from the Criminal Lawyers Association of Ontario. Value: $1,500; Effective: 2005-2006 to 2009-2010.
Davies, Ward, Phillips & Vineberg LLP Prizes (3): Awarded to three students who have shown exceptional promise in their second year and who have made the Dean's Honor List in that year. Value: $300 each
Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP Scholarship: Awarded annually to the student in second year who has achieved the highest cumulative average in first and second year. Value: $500
Goodmans Award in Taxation: Awarded to the second year student with the highest average in courses in the Area of Concentration: Taxation. Value: $500
Gowling Lafleur Henderson Award: Awarded to the second year student achieving the highest average in Commercial and Company Law. Value: $300
Hanes, Buchner and Uren Award: Awarded to the student who shows the greatest overall improvement in academic standing from the first to second year. Value: $300
Michael Allen Harte Award : Awarded annually to a second year student to honour the life of the late Michael Allen Harte, LLB 1988, Western. In addition to demonstrating academic ability, the recipient will have made significant contributions to the life of the Law School, his/her classmates and the community. The student will also reflect Michael's generosity of spirit, his humour and zest for life and his wonderful capacity for unfailing and enduring friendship, shared with so many. This award was established by Michael's brother, Paul E. Harte, LLB (U.W.O.) 1992, and their parents, Norma and Graeme Haill. Professor Denys C. Holland Award: Awarded to a second year student who has in that year made a significant contribution to the quality of education and the quality of life in the Faculty of Law. Selection is made by a committee composed of the Dean, Faculty and students, and is based on meritorious academic standing in law and outstanding contributions in the service of students in the Faculty. Provided in memory of the late Professor Denys C. Holland. Value: $100
James G. McKee Taxation Award: Awarded to a full-time student who has completed second year based on academic achievement and interest in second year courses in the Area of Concentration: Taxation. The award is to cover the conference expenses (including conferences fees, travel, accommodation, etc) in attending the Canadian Tax Foundation's National Tax Conference in the recipient's third year. The recipient will be selected by the Dean of the Faculty of Law. This award was established by Mr. James G. McKee (LLB '79) through Foundation Western. Total available annually is $4,000 and the number and value are at the discretion of the Dean of Law. Number of awards and value dependent on location of annual conference (e.g., three awards when conference is in Toronto; 1-2 awards when conference is in Montreal or Vancouver). Effective 2005-06 only. The annual limit will revert back to $2,000 in future years.
Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt Award in Tax Law: Awarded annually to a full-time second year Law student in the Area of Concentration: Taxation, based on academic achievement. This award was established by a generous donation from Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP alumni through Foundation Western. Value: (1 at $5,000 effective for 2002-2003 only; 1 at $2,000 effective May 2003 to May 2006; 1 at $5,000 effective May 2007 and thereafter)
Sherrard Kuzz LLP Prize: Awarded annually to a student in second year Law who has achieved academic excellence in the following areas of study: labour law, employment law, and administrative law. This prize is made possible by the generosity of Sherrard Kuzz. Value: $500; Effective: May 2003 to April 2014

Baker and McKenzie International Law Research Award: Awarded to a student demonstrating excellence in research in the International Business Transactions course or in a research paper on International Law submitted for this prize that deals with any area of International Law. Value: $600
Leslie V. Balogh Memorial Prize: Awarded to a student who excels in the area of Corporate Law/Income Taxation. Established through Foundation Western by the Faculty of Law in memory of Leslie Balogh, a Faculty member from 1970 to 1976. Value: $150
Bereskin & Parr Award in Industrial and Intellectual Property: Awarded to a student exhibiting exceptional academic ability in the area of Industrial and Intellectual Property Law. Value: $500

Paul Bradley Prize in Real Estate Law: Awarded to the student with the highest standing in Real Estate Transactions. Created by Sam Katz as a tribute to Paul Bradley of Lerner & Associates. Value: $350
C.C.H. Canadian Limited Prize: Awarded to the student achieving the highest standing in one or more courses selected by the Dean in the family law area. Value: One Year Subscription to Family Law Guide
Canvasback Publishing Prize in Administrative Law: Awarded to a student who achieves a high standing in Administrative Law and, in the opinion of the faculty members who taught Administrative Law during that academic year, has demonstrated a keen interest in the field of Administrative Law. Book Prize of Brown and Evans' Judicial Review of Administrative Action in Canada.
Cassels, Brock and Blackwell Centennial Award in Constitutional Law: Awarded to the second or third year student who has achieved the highest combined average in two courses to be selected by the Dean (one course being in constitutional law, human rights or civil liberties and the other course being in advocacy, trial advocacy, or constitutional litigation). Established by Cassels, Brock and Blackwell, in recognition of the founding of the firm in 1888. Value: $500
Cavalluzzo Hayes Shilton McIntyre & Cornish Award in Labour Law: Awarded annually to the student or students who achieve the highest academic standing in the Advanced Labour Law course. The Faculty of Law will select the recipient(s). Value: $475; Effective May 2003 to April 2010.
Edward C. Elwood Q.C. Prize in Wills and Trusts: Awarded to the two students who have achieved the highest combined overall standings in Wills and Trusts. Value: 1st: $750; 2nd: $450
Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP Award in Administrative Law: Awarded to the student achieving the highest standing in Administrative Law. Value: $500
Granger Award in Family Law: Awarded to the student with the highest standing in Family Law. Established by the firm of Lerner & Associates in honour of Mr. Justice Thomas Granger, a long time partner of the firm and eminent Family Law practitioner. Value: $500
Brad Hodgson Civil Litigation Award: Awarded to the second or third year law student who, in the opinion of the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Review Counsel, and Director of the Clinical Legal Education program, shows the greatest potential for success as a practitioner in the area of Civil Litigation. Selection will be made from those students registered in the Clinical Legal Education Program. Value: $500
Insolvency Institute of Canada Bruce Leonard Prize in Insolvency Studies: Awarded to a full-time student in the Law program who demonstrates academic excellence in either Bankruptcy and Insolvency Law (Law 325) or Corporate Reorganizations (Law 326) as determined by the Dean of the Faculty of Law in each year. This scholarship is made possible by gifts from the Insolvency Institute of Canada in honour of E. Bruce Leonard. Value: $1,000; Effective May 2003 to April 2013
Dr. Allison H. Johnson Prize: Awarded to the student who obtains the highest standing in Jurisprudence. Established through Foundation Western by the widow of the late Dr. Allison H. Johnson, longtime head of the Department of Philosophy. Value: $400
J.G. McLeod Scholarship in Family Law: Awarded to a full-time student in second or third year who demonstrates the highest achievement in an advanced family law course. Value: $750
David L. Johnston Prize in Securities Regulation: Awarded to the student with the highest standing in Securities Regulation. Made available through the generosity of the Student Legal Society of the Faculty of Law to honor David L. Johnston, Dean of the Faculty from 1974-79. Value: $175
Labour Law Achievement Award: Awarded to a full-time student in the Faculty of Law based on academic achievement (minimum 70% academic average) in Labour Law, Employment Law or an advanced course area, who has made a significant contribution to the activities of the Labour Law Society. A two page application outlining achievement and efforts in labour and employment law is required, along with a letter of interest. Applications may be directed to the Associate Dean (Academic) in the Faculty of Law. The selection committee, comprised of two Labour Law Society members, the Faculty Advisor, the Associate Dean (Academic) and the Academic Coordinator, will select the recipient. This award was established from proceeds of the Labour and Employment Law Conference held at UWO each spring. Value: $500
MacKewn, Winder, Kirwin Award: Awarded to the student achieving the highest standing in Debtor-Creditor Rights. Value: $600
Diana Majury-Cheryl Waldrum Award: Awarded to a student enrolled in the course in "Sex Discrimination and the Legal Process", who makes a significant contribution to the class. Selection to be made by students in the class. The award will be split. Forty percent will go to the student and the balance to a community organization, chosen by the student, which promotes gender equality.This award was established through Foundation Western. Value: $900
Miller Thomson Award in Labour Law: Awarded to the student with the highest standing in Labour Law. Value: Value: $300
Margaret E. Rintoul Award in Estate Planning: Awarded to a full-time student in the Faculty of Law who achieves the highest standing in the Estate Planning course. Mary Warner Prize in Human Rights: Awarded annually to a student completing the Human Rights course in Law who best exemplifies Mary Warner's commitment to the anti-discrimination ideals of Human Rights Law in Canada. Students enrolled in the course will select the recipient. Established by Professor Bruce Feldthusen in honour of Mary Warner. Value: $200

Flynn LLB '97 Memorial Scholarship: Awarded annually to a full-time student within the Faculty of Law upon completion of his or her final year, based upon achievement of the highest standing in the Area of Concentration in Intellectual Property, Information and Technology Law. This scholarship was established in memory of Ailbe C. Flynn, LLB '97 through generous contributions from his family and friends. Value: 1 at $1,125
Law Society of Upper Canada Prize: Awarded to 15 students in the graduating class, based on academic excellence. Value: (One year membership to the Osgoode Society for Canadian Legal History).
Arthur T. Little Scholarship: Awarded to the student achieving the highest marks over all three years of the LLB program. Value: Gold Medal and $300
Middlesex Law Association Silver Medal and Scholarship: Awarded to the student achieving the second highest standing over all three years of the LLB program. Value: Silver Medal and $200
Dean Ivan C. Rand Award (up to 3): Endowed by bequest of the late Ivan C. Rand. The annual income from the bequest shall be divided in such manner as the Selection Committee sees fit, amongst those students in their graduating year in the Faculty of Law who are honored by membership in the Honor Society. The Society was formed by the undergraduate students in 1963-64 to commemorate the Honorable Ivan C. Rand, Dean of the Faculty of Law from 1959 to 1964. The Selection Committee is composed of Faculty and students representatives. The Committee may nominate not more than three students from the graduating year for membership in the Society, selection being based upon meritorious academic standing throughout the undergraduate years in law, and outstanding contributions in the service of the students of the Faculty of Law. Value: Up to 3 at $100 each
David C. Scott Memorial Award: Presented annually to a third year student who has contributed to the Law School and the London community through participation in extra-curricular events and has maintained a strong academic performance. The recipient shall be selected by a joint Faculty and student committee. Established by family and friends in memory of David C. Scott, a law graduate of 1993. Value: $500
A.B. Siskind Scholarship: Awarded to the student achieving the highest standing in the third year of the LLB program. Provided from the income of a trust fund established under the will of the late A.B. Siskind, Q.C., a former sessional lecturer at and an enthusiastic supporter of this Faculty. Value: 1 at $1,000
Torkin Manes Cohen Arbus LLP Award: Awarded annually to a student in third year who has combined academic achievement with an eagerness to help people in a meaningful way. Selected by a committee of faculty and students. Value: Plaque plus $1,000; Effective: 2008-2009
WRITING PRIZES
Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt Award in Corporate/Commercial Law: Awarded annually to the student who submits the best written paper in the area of Corporate/Commercial Law. Value: $300 (will increase to $1,000 in 2005/06)
J.S.D. Tory Writing Prize: Awarded annually to the law student(s) who demonstrates excellence in writing and legal research in a paper for a law school course, a seminar or as an individual research paper, or which has already been accepted for publication by a legal journal. Students are required to apply to the Associate Dean (Academic), care of Lorraine Richardson, by April 30th, indicating the writing and research completed. The Award recipient(s) may be expected to use the funds to do whatever additional research and writing is necessary to improve the prospect of publication in a reputable Canadian law journal. Established by the firm of Tory, Tory, DesLauriers and Binnington in memory of the late J.S.D. Tory. Value: Up to $2,000
WeirFoulds LLP Writing Prize: Awarded annually to a student who demonstrates excellence in writing and legal research in the area of information or technology law and/or intellectual property. A paper written for a law school course, a seminar or as an individual research paper, or which has already been accepted for publication by a legal journal, will be considered for the prize. Value: $200 The winner of this prize will automatically be nominated for the ZSA Award of the Centre of Innovation Law and Policy.
Ted Wohl Prize in Labour Law: Awarded annually to the student who writes the best essay in the area of Labour Law. The essay need not be written as part of the requirements for a course. Value: $400
GENERAL AWARDS
Cassels, Brock & Blackwell LLP Centennial Award in Practice Skills: Awarded on the Dean's recommendation, to the second or third year student who, through course work, clinical education or extra-curricular activities exhibits exceptional ability in the understanding and pursuit of skills essential to a legal practitioner such as drafting, legal writing, advocacy, research, interviewing, counseling, mediation, negotiation, legal ethics, and professional responsibility. Established by Cassels, Brock and Blackwell, in recognition of the founding of the firm in 1888. Value: 1 at $500
Cherniak Cup: Established by Lerners LLP to honor Earl A. Cherniak, QC, and awarded to the best advocate in the trial advocacy competition.
Genest, Murray Award in Advocacy: Awarded to a student who has displayed outstanding advocacy skills and who intends to pursue a career as a legal professional in advocacy. Skills will have been displayed in classes, moot courts, community legal service, or in student affairs. Selection will be made through a committee of the Dean, the Director of Community Legal Services and a student. Value: $500
Gretta J. Grant Prize in Community Legal Service: Awarded to the student who, in the opinion of the Director of the Clinical Legal Program, has shown exceptional ability in community legal service. This includes participation in the formal program of Clinical Legal Studies or as a volunteer. Established by The Middlesex Women's Association to honor Gretta J. Grant, Q.C., on her retirement from the Ontario Legal Aid Plan. Value: $175
Lerners LLP Cup: Awarded to the best advocate in the appellate advocacy competition for second and third year students.
Cheryl Waldrum Award: Awarded to a student or students in law who attend(s) Otago University for a term on exchange. Recipient(s) will be selected by the Dean on the basis of academic achievement. The award is named in memory of Cheryl Waldrum, a graduate in Law of, and a faculty member at, both the University of Western Ontario and Otago University. This award was established by the Faculty of Law.
McKenzie Lake Lawyers LLP Award for Mature Students: Awarded to a full-time undergraduate student in Law who is a mature student and demonstrates financial need and academic achievement (B+ average). Applications can be accessed online through the Office of the Registrar's web site and must be submitted by October 31. The Faculty of Law will select the recipient once the Office of the Registrar has determined financial need. This award is made possible by a gift from McKenzie Lake Lawyers LLP. Morris Kroll Memorial Award: Awarded in odd numbered years to one or more students engaged in a project concerning the administration of law in London. The project is to be approved by the Dean and may include work in connection with Community Legal Services, the Advanced Family Law Project, Legal Aid, Consumer Complaint Bureau, the London Legal Clinic, or any other project which the Dean considers would further the administration of law in London. This award was made available by Mr. B. Franklin Shostack and Dr. Zane Cohen in memory of the late Morris Kroll. Value: Approximately $500
Colin D. Leitch Award: Awarded to the second or third year student who, in the opinion of the Director of the Clinical Legal program, shows the greatest potential for success as a practitioner in Criminal Law. Selection will be made from those students registered in the formal program of Clinical Legal Studies. Established in memory of Colin D. Leitch, a Western graduate in the Faculty of Law, through Foundation Western. Value: $1,000
Douglas May Memorial Prize: Awarded annually to a student, selected by faculty members, who has made a significant contribution to the quality of life in the Faculty of Law. The award is a sum from the income of a trust fund established by the classmates of Douglas May. Value: $175
Mr. Justice C.D. Stewart Trophy: Awarded to the best team of advocates in the preliminary rounds of the appellate advocacy competition for second and third year students.

Western/Laval Joint Program
Right Honourable Brian Dickson Award: Funded by the former Chief Justice of Canada, an award given to the student from Laval with the highest average in the courses taken at Western during the fourth year of the Joint Program. A similar award is offered to the Western student with the highest average at Laval. Value: $500

General Scholarships
Faculty Association Scholarship: Awarded on the basis of academic excellence in the preceding year to a student recommended by the Dean. Established by The University of Western Ontario Faculty Association. Value: $800
William McCallum Memorial Scholarship: The William McCallum Memorial Scholarship for the study of Law was established in 1977 in recognition of the late William McCallum. This scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate of Dawson College entering, or already studying law. The scholarship is renewable in the amount of $500 per year, for a maximum of four years. The William McCallum Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to students who show great promise of academic and professional success, and responsible citizenship. The basis for selecting winners is scholarship, character, leadership and community involvement. Interested students should apply to the William McCallum Scholarship Committee, c/o the Secretary General, Dawson College, 3040 Sherbrooke St. W., Montreal, Quebec H3Z 1A4, before May 1st. All official transcripts other than those from Dawson College must be received before an application will be considered. Proof of admission to law school must be provided by May 30th. Law Foundation of Newfoundland Scholarships (3): In honor of the 150th Anniversary of the Law Society of Newfoundland in 1984, the Law Foundation of Newfoundland established three law school entrance scholarships. These scholarships are tenable for first year studies at a Canadian law school. The scholarships will be in the amount of $5,000, payable in two installments. Applications must be received by May 1 and the scholarships will be awarded in June. Awards will be made on the basis of academic ability. Conditions of Eligibility: A candidate must be a Newfoundland resident; have achieved academic excellence, and not be the recipient of any other major scholarship. Ontario Law Foundation Graduate Scholarships (2): Awarded annually to graduates of the Faculty of Law to pursue post-graduate legal education. Selection will be made by a committee composed of the Dean and the Associate Deans. Deadline for application: June 1. Value: $1,500 each, up to a maximum of $3,000
Denys Holland Scholarship: Awarded to one or more students who demonstrate financial need and would be otherwise unable, due to financial circumstances, to begin or continue their studies. Students must be enrolled or accepted to undertake a full program of study at the University College London. Candidates must demonstrate, with references, that they have broad interests and are, or will be actively involved in and contribute to, the life of the College. The qualifications of candidates are considered by a Committee of the Academic Board to include the Dean or Deputy Dean of Students. International Internships
Robert White International Labour Law Internship: Established in recognition of the Canadian Auto Workers' generous gift and to honour Mr. Robert White for his international work with the International Labour Organization (ILO) for many years. The program is designed to place a Western Law student each summer with the ILO in Geneva, to assist on projects related to equality, workplace rights and the law. Members of the selection committee will include the Dean of Law; the President of the Labour Law Society or his or her representative; a Western Law labour law professor; the President of the CAW or his or her representative; Mr. Robert White or a representative of the family. Selection criteria include: demonstrated academic and research abilities; demonstrated interest and experience in industrial relations and/or labour law; demonstrated interest in international issues, including equality and human rights issues; ability to speak other languages, particularly French, would be an asset.
