External Advocacy Competitions


The Faculty enters teams in several external appellate advocacy competitions held across the country. These include the Jessup (sponsored by McCarthy Tétrault LLP), the Laskin, Wilson, and Niagara (sponsored by Lerners LLP), and the Gale, Canadian Corporate/Securities Law and the Harold Fox IP Moot competitions. Members of these teams enroll in Law 5715 or 5717 as their January Term course. For most external competitions, students are selected for these teams based on their performance in the Lerners LLP Cup.

The Faculty enters a team in the Mathews, Dinsdale & Clark LLP National Labour Law Moot. Members of this team enroll in Law 5720 as their January Term course. Students are selected for this team based on their performance in the Lerners LLP Cup.

The Faculty enters a team in the Kawaskimhon, a talking circle focusing on issues of aboriginal law. Members of this team enroll in Law 5712 as their January Term course. Students are selected for this team based on their applications submitted to the Faculty Supervisor.

The Faculty enters a team in the Arnup Cup, a trial advocacy competition among Ontario law schools, from which the winners progress to the national trial advocacy competition, the Sopinka Cup. Members of this team enroll in Law 5725 as their January Term course. Students are selected for this team based on their performance in the Cherniak Cup.
