Where We Are

Canada

Country: Canada

Canada is a large country to the north of the United States of America. Canada is so large, in fact, that it spans six time zones and climate varies dramatically throughout the year and across the country. We have ten provinces and three territories. Canada has two official languages, English and French.

Province: Ontario

The province of Ontario is the second largest province in Canada, taking up more than 10% of Canada's entire area. It is larger than France and Spain put together, larger than California and Texas put together and about the same size as Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland). Nearly 40% of Canadians live in Ontario. Water covers about one sixth of the province, including 250,000 lakes. The five Great Lakes, controlled jointly by Canada and the United States, are the world's biggest continuous body of fresh water. This province is located in the middle of the country where winters bring cold temperatures and lots of snow from December to March and summers are generally hot and sunny. Spring and autumn are moderate in temperature. Ontario's people and places are as diverse as its varied geography. Ontario's capital city of Toronto is home to world class theater, museums and shopping. It's citizens take pride in its multicultural heritage.

City: London

LondonAffectionately called the "Forest City", London is the 10th largest city in Canada and is the regional centre for southwestern Ontario. Halfway along the Toronto-Detroit corridor, London is a multi-faceted city that is nationally recognized in the areas of medicine, education, the arts, sports and business. Excellent restaurants, entertainment and shopping have always attracted visitors to London, and with the opening of a new downtown arena, many more visitors now flock to the Forest City.

London boasts more than 60 km of paved pathways which wind through parkland down from the north end of the city near the UWO campus, past the forks in the Thames river downtown, and out to the west end through Greenway park, past picturesque Wonderland Gardens into Springbank Park. A quieter but equally picturesque route follows the east form of the river out to Highbury Avenue. London is home to Orchestra London, the Grand Theatre and Museum London as well as numerous art galleries, cinemas, museums, comedy clubs, golf courses, parks and sports facilities.

London's central location is within a two hour drive of the US border, Niagara Falls, Stratford (home of the world renowned Stratford Festival theatres) and our Province's capital, the city of Toronto (home of the Blue Jays, Maple Leafs, and Raptors, as well as world class theatre, music, restaurants and shopping.) There are also numerous small communities in the London area which offer attractions including seasonal festivals, local artisans, and lakeside beaches.

"A group of exchange students went to Algonquin Park. The kind people at the Western Outdoors Club lent us (free of charge) some backpacks, sleeping bags, mats and a large tent. The scenery we passed was amazing, and the silence passing in our ears as we paddled gave the place an extremely tranquil and idyllic feel."
