Attendance at the pre-departure meeting is a MANDATORY requirement for all students participating in Western Law's exchange programs. At the meeting, you will be given important forms, instructions and vital information regarding your exchange term. Failure to attend this meeting may result in your exchange opportunity being cancelled. Pre-Departure meetings for students participating in a 2012-13 exchange placement are scheduled for: Friday, March 23 from 3-6 p.m. - Attendance required for all outgoing exchange students and summer internship students. Wednesday, March 28 from 12:30 - 1:50 p.m. - Regional meeting with attendance required for all outgoing exchange students with placements in Europe. Thursday, March 29 from 12:30 - 1:50 p.m. - Regional meeting with attendance required for all outgoing exchange students with placements in North America, Asian, Australia and New Zealand. Prior to departure, all students will be required to sign an Acknowledgement and Assumption of Risk form, and agree in advance to the disclosure of personal information to the University of Western Ontario Police for emergency purposes only. Students must acknowledge the need to act in a responsible manner consistent with the Western Code of Student Conduct at all times while on exchange. Students are responsible for obtaining required documentation for presentation at international borders. This may include a passport, student visa, proof of financial security and proof of participation in the exchange. The University of Western Ontario is not responsible for denied entry to any foreign country, either to a student or his or her dependants. Be sure to submit your passport and visa applications in a timely manner to avoid last minute concerns or delays. Locate the Canadian Consulate in the country you will be visiting, know how to contact them and find out what services they provide. Travel arrangements are the responsibility of the student. Canada Border Services Agency provides information on customs regulations, income taxes and registration of valuables. Research the accommodations that are available in the vicinity of the host school. If you must wait until after you arrive to find accommodation, be sure to allow extra time before classes start for your housing search. Before you leave, research housing options and availablity, transportion, locations and expected prices. Find out if your host school requires you to pre-enroll in specific courses before you leave, or if you are expected to choose your courses after you arrive. Students participating in an exchange must enroll in a full-time course load as determined by the host university. Your final course selection must be approved by Western Law's Associate Dean (Academic) in order to receive credit for your term. Students are required to complete all core and essay requirements at Western. "Living and studying abroad changed my attitude toward professional
and personal opportunities. I felt my horizons broaden, and I now feel more open to living and
working internationally. I now have contacts and friends around the
world and I will be able to network and grow as a legal professional with their
support. My favourite
memory is the satisfaction of being able to operate in Spanish." -- Meg Atkinson, Winter 2010 exchange to ESADE Law School, Barcelona, Spain
