Library is the central information resource for students and faculty members at the Faculty of Law. Located on three floors in the core of the Josephine Spencer Niblett Law Building, the Law Library houses approximately 180,000 volumes and 45,000 microforms. More than $600,000 is invested in the collection each year. Primary materials include a comprehensive collection of Canadian legislation and law reports, the principal British and American legal sources, and growing holdings in European and other international materials. The Law Library has an excellent collection of legal treatises and periodical literature. In addition, it provides access to a broad range of legal databases including Quicklaw, WestlaweCARSWELL, LexisNexis, HeinOnline, and Maritime Law Book's National Reporter System. Full-text legislation sources and legal literature indexes are also available online. The Law Library has seven full-time staff members - four librarians and three library assistants - plus several casual and part-time staff. Instructional support for the print and electronic resources is a key responsibility of the Law Library staff. Through orientation sessions and ongoing workshops, graduate students will get hands-on experience reviewing and refining technologies for finding and evaluating legal research resources. Individual reference assistance is available for students requiring in-depth assistance. Students have access to the entire University of Western Ontario library system, which includes the D.B. Weldon Library and six division/professional libraries. Students may also use the London Public Library system, which administers a central library and fifteen branches. Should students require materials not held by the Law Library or elsewhere on campus these can usually be obtained expeditiously from other institutions through the document delivery / interlibrary loan service. A wireless network operates in public areas throughout the Law Building, including classrooms, student lounges and everywhere in the Law Library. LL.M. students with suitably equipped notebook computers can browse the web, send and receive email without being tied to a specific location. AC power outlets for plugging in notebook computers are found in virtually all classrooms and in many locations in the library. It is recommended, but not required, that graduate students own personal computers. Housing for graduate students may be found both on and off campus. Health Services
Health Insurance
Health insurance offered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan is the only form of basic hospital and physician insurance permitted in Ontario. It is the student's responsibility to obtain the necessary coverage under OHIP. Students are reminded that if they do not hold hospital services insurance and are required by reason of accident or illness to enter hospital, they may incur very costly daily charges. Students from other provinces who already have health insurance are urged to ascertain, before coming to Ontario, if their policies will be honoured in Ontario and for how long.
Counselling Services
Career and academic counselling is available through the office of the Graduate Programs Coordinator within the Faculty of Law.
