Western Law launches new international combined degree program

A new combined JD/LLM program with the University of Auckland will be introduced this September to enhance the international focus of Western Law.

This new program will allow Western students to earn a JD from Western and an LLM from Auckland in three and a half years. They will spend one semester at Auckland as an exchange student, and then an additional term formally enrolled as a University of Auckland LLM student. Similarly, Auckland LLB students will be able to complement their law degree by earning a Western LLM by attending Western for a full year, the first term as an exchange student and the remaining two terms enrolled in Western Law's LLM program.

“This is a marvelous program between Canada and New Zealand”, says Mark Perry, Western Law’s Associate Dean. “In this instance, being on opposite sides of the globe is a great advantage. A collaboration of this calibre provides students with the best of both hemispheres. An exchange at this level exemplifies the advantages of internationalisation for advanced study.”

Western’s Dean Ian Holloway adds, “The University of Auckland is one of the finest law schools in the common law world. We are fortunate to have had a very warm partnership with them for several years now. With this new combined degree program, we are looking forward to taking it to the next level.”

This will be the second such program launched by Western Law. In 2006, a combined JD/LLM program was announced with the University of Groningen, one of the Netherlands’ top-ranked universities.
