since he was a child, Mohamed Khimji wanted to be an actor. “Acting is
actually experiencing trying to be another person,” he says. “It’s
challenging empathizing with someone who’s not you.” But Khimji left

Participants from around the world discussed and debated the concept of proportionality in human rights law. Visiting scholars from the UK, Europe, New Zealand, USA, Mexico, and Canada brought a diversity of opinion on normative and institutional questions related to the use of a principle of proportionality in judicial review. [read more] Robert Glasgow was this year’s top oralist in the Lerners Cup, Western Law’s upper year appellate advocacy competition. The Lerners LLP Cup drew more than 60 students to moot questions related to a child’s refusal to consent to a blood transfusion for religious reasons.

[read more] Some of the world's top public law scholars and legal philosophers will be participating in Western Law's Preeminent Public Law Scholars Series, now in its second year. The Series begins on October 8 with Professor Frederick Schauer, of the University of Virginia. A leading expert on the First Amendment, constitutional law, and legal philosophy, Schauer is the David and Mary Harrison Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Virginia.
A new legal research group launched at Western Law will provide a forum to stimulate further research and greater collaboration in the field of tort law. Tort law is a primary part of private law and the law of obligations that provides compensation not only for personal injuries and property damage but also for pure economic losses, environmental harm and psychiatric illness.
Margaret Capes, Senior Counsel with Western’s Community Legal Services Clinic and coordinator of Western Law’s Public Legal Education Program, is the recipient of a 2010 Zenith Award. [read more] Professor Brian Fitzgerald, Professor of Intellectual Property and Innovation at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia, will be teaching "Select Issues in Copyright Law: Past, Present and Future" at Western Law in the Fall 2010 term.
[read more] On Tuesday, September 7 Dean Ian Holloway welcomed the Class of 2013 to law school. In his remarks Dean Holloway commented on how the class of 177 students represented a significant cross-section of Canada. Western Law's newest students come from forty-two different universities – including five in the United States and represent no less than 43 academic disciplines and a wide variety of backgrounds.

Johnston, 69, is currently president of the University of Waterloo and is set to become the Queen's next representative in Canada Oct. 1, replacing Michaelle Jean, who will begin a four-year post as special envoy to Haiti for the United Nations.
[read more] It was a perfect day for a celebration. Family, friends and faculty gathered at the Western Law Awards ceremony on June 18 to congratulate the class of 2010. Western Law professor Bradley Miller appeared before the Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs in Ottawa to discuss the constitutional conventions surrounding the prorogation of Parliament. Professor Miller previously addressed prorogation and the role of the Governor General in a
public forum hosted by the Public Law and Legal Philosophy Research Group at Western Law and his commentary was published in the
Public Law Review. Western Law Professor Solomon is the recipient of The Kaiser Foundation’s 2010 National Award for Excellence in Public Policy. Solomon was selected by a National Advisory Board based on his record of outstanding achievement in reducing alcohol and other drug harm through effective public policy.

This research-based program is for students who wish to gain an understanding of law in general and the Canadian legal system in particular. University of Western Law Dean Ian Holloway, together with students, alumni and friends, rang the morning bell on April 29 to open the Toronto Stock Exchange in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the school's founding.
Margaret Banks, former Law Librarian and a Professor Emerita at The University of Western Ontario has died. Banks, 82, passed away peacefully at Parkwood Hospital on Thursday, April 29. "For the first two thirds of the law school's life, Margaret was one of the most important people in the school," said Ian Holloway, Dean of Western Law.
[read more] Western Law Professor Valerie Oosterveld (pictured left) has been awarded two Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) grants for international law research. Oosterveld received an individual one year standard SSHRC grant for $31,664 for a project focusing on gender in international criminal justice.
[read more] Six Western Law students have been selected for judicial clerkships with courts and judges at the federal and provincial levels. Several courts in Canada, both at the trial and appeal levels, offer clerking opportunities.
[read more] Western Law hosted a new advocacy competition in Legal Ethics and Professionalism on April 6, 2010. The competition, sponsored by Lenczner Slaght Royce Smith Griffin LLP, featured twenty first-year students appealing the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision in Strother v. 3464920 Canada Inc., a case involving conflict of interest and a lawyer’s duty of loyalty. Lenczner Slaght is based in Toronto and has been consistently recognized as one of Canada’s premier litigation practices.

Eleven Western Law students will be spending their summer expanding their knowledge of international law and issues thanks to the school's International Law Internship Program (ILIP). The creditor was summarily convicted of attempted murder in a trial without due process, then forced to give up most of his wealth and even his religion. This wasn’t a case from modern day Canada, though; the creditor was Shylock, and Shakespeare imagined his predicament more than 400 years ago.
