The final rounds of the 2008 Lerners LLP Cup were held on Thursday, October 3, at Western Law. The team of Omar Ha-Redeye and Lawrence Gridin were awarded the Mr. Justice C.D. Stewart Trophy, which is presented to the team with the highest score from the preliminary rounds. The top oralist of the competition, earning the Lerners LLP Cup, was Chris Crighton.

Justice James O'Reilly of the Federal Court of Canada, Regional Senior Justice Lynne Leitch of the Superior Court of Ontario, and Justice Gordon Killeen (retired) formerly of the Ontario Superior Court of Ontario presided over the final rounds in which the competitors mooted the reasonable expectation of privacy, the admissibility of evidence and the constitutional meaning of "search" within section 8 of the Charter.

The Lerners LLP Cup is Western Law’s annual internal appellate advocacy competition and is directed by Professor Mysty Clapton. This voluntary competition gives upper-year students the opportunity to argue a hypothetical case before a court of appeal. In an appeal case, the facts are not in dispute, which allows the advocates to focus their submissions on questions of law. Judges, practicing lawyers and third-year students generously volunteer their time to act as judges for the competition. The top students advance to the final rounds to compete for the Lerners LLP Cup. Doing well in this competition is the gateway to qualifying to represent Western Law in one of several external advocacy competitions against other Canadian and American law schools.

Western Law offers its sincere thanks to Michael Lerner and Lerners LLP for their generous and continued support of this competition.
