The Student Legal Society (SLS) is the representative body for all Western Law students.
It operates in accordance with its Constitution and Bylaws to oversee and facilitate the betterment of the student experience at Western Law. The primary role of the SLS is twofold.
First, it exists to promote the interests of its students. Second, using a one-time fee received from each incoming first-year or exchange student, the SLS funds and organizes professional, academic, athletic, and social activities through various clubs and committees. The SLS is comprised of fourteen positions, five members of the Executive, and nine year representatives. The Executive of the SLS consists of the following positions: The President is the head of the SLS, and Western Law's primary liaison between the students and the faculty, alumni, and community at-large. The President is also Western Law's representative on the University Students' Council, which is the governing council for undergraduate students of all faculties at the University of Western Ontario The Vice-President, Student Affairs oversees all clubs and committees. The Vice President, Academic Affairs is the liason between students and the faculty and administration regarding academic issues. The Treasurer oversees all financial matters, including the budgeting process by which student fees are allocated for use by clubs and committees. The Secretary oversees the administration of the SLS. Recognizing that students' concerns may vary from year-to-year, there are also three representatives elected from each of Year 1, Year 2, and Year 3 at Western Law. Each of these individuals is responsible for ensuring that students' concerns come to the attention of the council. Members of the Executive and year representatives each have one vote at meetings of the SLS, which are held on a weekly basis. As well, all members of the Executive and five others from the SLS have voting positions on Western Law' Faculty Council, which meets monthly.
