Awarded to second-year Law students who demonstrate academic excellence in the first year of their law studies. To be eligible, a student will have obtained an academic standing in the top 10% of the law school class and demonstrated financial need. Additional selection criteria may include: membership in a historically disadvantaged group, as outlined by the Ontario Human Rights Commission; involvement in the community; participation in extracurricular activities at the University or the Law School; and whether the student has multiple responsibilities and limited support. The award will continue into third year if the recipient's second year average places him or her in the top 20% of the class for that year and he or she continues to demonstrate financial need. Candidates must complete an online financial need application through the Office of the Registrar's Web site, in addition to completing an application form through the Student Services Office of the Law School (both of which are due October 31st). The Registrar's Office will assess financial need and the Faculty of Law will make the final selection. This scholarship was established by a generous gift from Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP. Awarded to the student achieving the highest standing in Criminal Law. Awarded to the students standing first, second and third in the first year of the LLB program. Awarded annually to a full-time student entering second year in the Faculty of Law based on academic achievement (top 10% of the class) and financial need. Preference will be given to a student who has made a significant contribution to the life of the law school and his or her classmates. Applications for this scholarship can be accessed online through the office of the Registrar's web site and must be submitted, along with a letter describing the candidate's contributions to the Law School, by March 15. The Office of the Registrar will determine financial need and the Faculty of Law will select the recipient in July. The annual income from the bequest shall be divided in such manner as the Selection Committee sees fit, amongst those students in their graduating year in the Faculty of Law who are honored by membership in the Honor Society. The Society was formed by the undergraduate students in 1963-64 to commemorate the Honorable Ivan C. Rand, Dean of the Faculty of Law from 1959 to 1964. The Selection Committee is composed of Faculty and students representatives. Awarded annually to the student who submits the best written paper in the area of Corporate/Commercial Law. J.S.D. Tory Writing Prize: Awarded annually to the law student(s) who demonstrates excellence in writing and legal research in a paper for a law school course, a seminar or as an individual research paper, or which has already been accepted for publication by a legal journal. Students are required to apply to the Associate Dean (Academic), care of Lorraine Richardson, by April 30th, indicating the writing and research completed. The Award recipient(s) may be expected to use the funds to do whatever additional research and writing is necessary to improve the prospect of publication in a reputable Canadian law journal. Awarded annually to a student who demonstrates excellence in writing and legal research in the area of information or technology law and/or intellectual property. A paper written for a law school course, a seminar or as an individual research paper, or which has already been accepted for publication by a legal journal, will be considered for the prize. Established by Lerners LLP to honor Earl A. Cherniak, QC, and awarded to the best advocate in the trial advocacy competition. Awarded to a student who has displayed outstanding advocacy skills and who intends to pursue a career as a legal professional in advocacy. Skills will have been displayed in classes, moot courts, community legal service, or in student affairs. Selection will be made through a committee of the Dean, the Director of Community Legal Services and a student. Awarded to the student who, in the opinion of the Director of the Clinical Legal Program, has shown exceptional ability in community legal service. Awarded to a student or students in law who attend(s) Otago University for a term on exchange. Recipient(s) will be selected by the Dean on the basis of academic achievement. The award is named in memory of Cheryl Waldrum, a graduate in Law of, and a faculty member at, both the University of Western Ontario and Otago University. This award was established by the Faculty of Law. Awarded in odd numbered years to one or more students engaged in a project concerning the administration of law in London. The project is to be approved by the Dean and may include work in connection with Community Legal Services, the Advanced Family Law Project, Legal Aid, Consumer Complaint Bureau, the London Legal Clinic, or any other project which the Dean considers would further the administration of law in London. This award was made available by Mr. B. Franklin Shostack and Dr. Zane Cohen in memory of the late Morris Kroll. Awarded to the second or third year student who, in the opinion of the Director of the Clinical Legal program, shows the greatest potential for success as a practitioner in Criminal Law. Leitch, a Western graduate in the Faculty of Law, through Foundation Western. Awarded annually to a student, selected by faculty members, who has made a significant contribution to the quality of life in the Faculty of Law. The award is a sum from the income of a trust fund established by the classmates of Douglas May. Awarded to the best team of advocates in the preliminary rounds of the appellate advocacy competition for second and third year students. Awarded to the student in the JD/MBA program with the highest overall academic average over the three years in the program. Established through Foundation Western by students and Faculty of the JD and MBA programs in memory of Stephen Watchorn, a former student in the JD/MBA program. Funded by the former Chief Justice of Canada, an award given to the student from Laval with the highest average in the courses taken at Western during the fourth year of the Joint Program. A similar award is offered to the Western student with the highest average at Laval. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence in the preceding year to a student recommended by the Dean. Established by The University of Western Ontario Faculty Association. The William McCallum Memorial Scholarship for the study of Law was established in 1977 in recognition of the late William McCallum. This scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate of Dawson College entering, or already studying law. The scholarship is renewable in the amount of $500 per year, for a maximum of four years. The William McCallum Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to students who show great promise of academic and professional success, and responsible citizenship. The basis for selecting winners is scholarship, character, leadership and community involvement. In honor of the 150th Anniversary of the Law Society of Newfoundland in 1984, the Law Foundation of Newfoundland established three law school entrance scholarships. These scholarships are tenable for first year studies at a Canadian law school. The scholarships will be in the amount of $5,000, payable in two installments. Applications must be received by May 1 and the scholarships will be awarded in June. Awards will be made on the basis of academic ability. Awarded to one or more students who demonstrate financial need and would be otherwise unable, due to financial circumstances, to begin or continue their studies. Students must be enrolled or accepted to undertake a full program of study at the University College London. Candidates must demonstrate, with references, that they have broad interests and are, or will be actively involved in and contribute to, the life of the College. The qualifications of candidates are considered by a Committee of the Academic Board to include the Dean or Deputy Dean of Students.
