
Community Legal Services provides free legal advice and representation to members of the community, and to Fanshawe College and Western students. We are funded by Legal Aid Ontario, Fanshawe Student's Council, the University Students Council, and Faculty of Law. Community Legal Services would also like to thank the Law Foundation of Ontario for their continued financial support. Over 200 students work in our clinic over the course of the academic year under the supervision of five experienced lawyers. We represent clients who are charged with less serious criminal charges (called summary conviction charges) under the Criminal Code of Canada or the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. We will also represent clients where the matter involves traffic tickets worth six points or more, as well as charges under other provincial statutes and some City of London by-law offences. We only represent persons who are not eligible to receive a legal aid certificate from the Legal Aid Area Office. Young persons under age 18 will only be accepted as client after they have applied for and been denied Legal Aid. These clients will be required to bring with them a Notice of Refusal from Legal Aid before we will accept them. CLS represents tenants (under the residential tenancy act) in matters such as: Hearings for these disputes are held either in the Landlord Tenant Board or in the Small Claims Court Evictions are handled by Neighbourhood Legal Services at 519-438-2890. We represent clients in Small Claims Court matters where the amount in dispute is more than $2,500.00 and less than $25,000.00. Estate law is the newest area covered by CLS. We will do wills and powers of attorney for low-income seniors and persons with an illness or disability in London-Middlesex. CLS will represent UWO students in their academic appeals. However, our role is limited to representing clients before the Senate Appeal Committee, which is the final step in the appeal process. Through the Dispute Resolution Centre Permanent Resident Applications Skilled Worker Applications Started in 2004, our Public Legal Education (PLE) program is aimed at social agencies and non-profit organizations, their staffs, and their clients. We will appear at seminars to provide information on legal issues they face day-to-day. We DO NOT assist with any family law matters, completion of forms, small claims matters under $2500 or over $25,000. complaints against lawyers, real estate matters or eviction notices. CLS will provide notarized copies of documents and witness affidavits and statutory declarations. Certified Copies: Original documents must be left as we are requried to make the copies. The process may take from 2-5 days. Witness Affidavits, Statutory Declarations, Invitations to Family Member; Unless stated on the document these must be signed by a Notary Public. These are by appointment only. Documents which may be signed by a Commissioner of Oaths, do not require an appointment and may be signed by one of our staff. Where a signature needs to be witnessed - DO NOT SIGN THE DOCUMENT! We need to watch you sign the document. If it can be signed by a Commissioner of Oaths there is no need for an appointment as both secretaries are Commissioners. If the document needs to be witnessed by a Notary Public, this is a Lawyer and you must make an appointment (see contact information below). Same day appointments are NOT possible except in extreme cases. CERTIFIED COPIES AND WITNESSING SIGNATURES: Students and Seniors: $5.00 each.
