Summer After 1L Program (SA1L)

“The SA1L Program will give our students a head start in the professional legal world, expose them to different types of legal careers, and provide them with financial support. We hope to remove the uncertainty many new law students may feel towards gaining legal experience.” - Erika Chamberlain, Dean of Western Law.

Western Law is proud to launch the Summer After 1L program, also known as SA1L, a first of its kind in Canada. This ten-week program aims to connect every 1L student with paid law-related summer placements, blending legal theory and practice to help our students build critical skills and get a head start on building professional experience.

SA1L provides placements and internships through the Western Law Internship Program (WLIP), affiliated legal clinics, faculty-led research, and external placements with advocacy organizations, legal research and law firms, and corporate entities. Students are also welcomed to submit proposals for funding for compelling legal research or practice areas they wish to pursue.
